We are seeking an experienced and motivated engineer with strong technical expertise in network security and modern access control technologies. The postholder will work within the Network team, collaborating closely with colleagues in the Cybersecurity team and wider IS Infrastructure teams. You will lead the design and deployment of advanced controls including Network Access Control, Zero Trust Network Access, Web Application Firewalls and enhanced IDS or IPS platforms. These technologies are critical to improving segmentation, minimising surface exposure and ensuring that the University’s systems remain robust against evolving threats.
The successful candidate will have extensive experience across core networking technologies, hands on knowledge of firewalls, VPNs, ACLs and secure network architectures, and a strong understanding of enterprise security design principles. You will bring a methodical approach, strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Experience with automation and orchestration using tools such as Python, Ansible or APIs would be beneficial but not essential.
This is a rare opportunity to work at scale in a complex and diverse environment, supporting one of Scotland’s leading universities as it delivers a significant uplift in cyber maturity. Your work will directly influence the University’s ability to safeguard its digital infrastructure, protect sensitive research data and meet the requirements of key assurance frameworks including Cyber Essentials Plus and the NCSC Cyber Assessment Framework.
