Accessibility Statement

Accessibility statement for University of Strathclyde Applicant Tracking System (Engage ATS)

This accessibility statement applies to the University of Strathclyde Applicant Tracking System.

This website is run by the University of Strathclyde. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts using browser or device settings
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using a keyboard or speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • third party components are not fully operable with a keyboard
  • some dialogs cannot be viewed at larger zoom sizes without loss of content
  • some text content in documents and website form controls have insufficient contrast
  • most PDF and Word documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
  • some logos in PDF and Word documents are missing alternative text
  • YouTube video and audio content are not fully accessible

Technical information about this website’s accessibility

The University of Strathclyde is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Compliance status

The website has been tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA standard.

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Third party components

We have identified issues within third party components used on our website. We are collaborating with our suppliers to improve the accessibility of their components or to source alternatives.

We have made an assessment of addressing the accessibility issues with these components, and have included them in the Disproportionate Burden section. We will continually review the situation with Havas People Ltd. and make a further assessment when the supplier contract is up for renewal, likely to be in October 2025.

Website content

We have identified the following issues with our website content. We aim to address these issues by the 31st December 2024.

Forms

On some of our forms, the custom focus indicator has insufficient contrast. People with low vision may not be able to identify which form control is focused. This fails WCAG 1.4.11 Non-Text Contrast.

Some tooltip trigger buttons have insufficient contrast with their adjacent colours. This may make it difficult for some people to identify the component and its purpose. This fails WCAG 1.4.11 Non-Text Contrast.

Modal Dialogs

The Login and Register modal dialogs require scrolling in multiple dimensions at 400% zoom. This fails WCAG 1.4.10 Reflow.

Some dialog content is partly covered by the third party chat button when viewed at 400% zoom, making content hard to read. This fails WCAG 1.4.10 Reflow.

Links

There are some links that rely on colour alone to distinguish them from the surrounding text. Some people, such as those who are colour blind, may have difficulty identifying that these items are links. This fails WCAG 1.4.1 Use of Color.

PDFs and Word documents

Some documents are not semantically marked up correctly, so are not readable by a screen reader. This fails WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships.

Some documents do not have sufficient contrast between the text and background colours. This fails WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum).

Some logo images are missing alt text. This fails WCAG 1.1.1 Non-Text Content.

Some documents do not have a language definition. This fails WCAG 3.1.1 Language of Page.

We have updated our Word document template to address accessibility issues. The new template has been shared with our recruitment managers and will be adopted over time moving forwards.

Disproportionate burden

Accessing and operating third party components

Our website uses third party components contracted by Havas People Ltd. We acknowledge the accessibility issues within these components.

We’ve assessed the cost of fixing the issues with accessing and operating the following third-party components. We believe that doing so now would be a disproportionate burden within the meaning of the accessibility regulations. We will make another assessment when the supplier contract is up for renewal, likely to be in October 2025.

AccessiBe Accessibility Tool

The AccessiBe accessibility tool does not use landmarks appropriately and uses inappropriate mark-up which may impact navigation for screen reader users.

OneTrust Cookie Consent

The OneTrust Cookie Consent does not reflow when zoomed in at 400%, so content becomes unavailable which may impact people with a visual impairment.

Additionally, the Cookie Consent has hidden elements that receive focus, which can be confusing for people who use a keyboard.

There is also inappropriate ARIA mark-up used to hide elements which are not on screen, which may impact assistive technology users’ understanding and operation of the component.

Freshchat Technical Support

The Freshchat Technical Support does not reflow when zoomed in at 400%, so content becomes unavailable which may impact people with a visual impairment.

Additionally, the Freshchat Technical Support does not fully manage focus appropriately. This may result in a confusing experience for keyboard users.

There is also inappropriate ARIA mark-up used to label the chat button. This may make the component’s purpose unclear to assistive technology users.

Captcha Images

The Captcha component relies on images only for its challenge-response test. This information is not provided in another format. These images also do not have an appropriate text alternative. People with sight loss may be unable to complete these challenges.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

Our website contains third-party components that we do not control or pay for or develop ourselves. This includes:

  • Social media buttons
  • YouTube video/audio player
