FTE: 1 (35 hours/week)
Closing Date: 11 September 2023
The Department of Chemical and Process Engineering (CPE) within the Faculty of Engineering is seeking to recruit a Research Associate to join the waste valorisation research group focussed on investigating new strategies for deriving value from hard-to-dispose wastes and developing next-generation waste treatment systems with integrated carbon capture and resource recovery facilities. Specifically, the post holder will develop environmentally friendly processes for repurposing organic waste streams e.g. digestate from anaerobic digestion plants, sewage sludge, and waste carbon gases for value-added products e.g. alcohols, bioplastics - reducing the volume of sludge for disposal, and eliminating emissions of carbon gases.
The postholder, under the guidance of the research group leader, will develop research objectives and proposals, play a lead role in relation to a specific project/s or part of a broader project, and conduct individual and/or collaborative research. The project will be based on the use of microorganisms for converting organic waste to value-added products e.g., methane, and biohydrogen. The post will involve the design and setting up of experimental test facilities including a 20 L laboratory-scale UASB reactor. The project in this way combines process engineering, biotechnology, and bioprocessing for the near-term development of carbon capture and sequestration technologies for the wastewater sector.
Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Prof Ashleigh Fletcher (ashleigh.fletcher@strath.ac.uk) or Dr Tosin Somorin (tosin.somorin@strath.ac.uk).
