Salary: £36,024 - £38,205
FTE: 1 FTE
Term: Fixed Term (12 months)
Closing Date: 05/08/2024

The Role: Applications are welcome for motivated candidates interested in using novel, synthetic photoelectrochemical methodology to streamline pharmaceutical synthesis, leverage biomass and upcycle persistent pollutants. The Research Associate will form part of a 3-person team, working with two doctoral students on i) the design of multifunctional molecular catalysts activatable under photoelectrochemical conditions, and ii) high-value synthetic applications.

Term: Fixed Term (1 year, with possibility of a further 1-year extension)

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work in the group of Dr. Joshua Philip Barham at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow). The Glasgow-based Research Associate will form part of a team within a UKRI EPSRC Grant (formerly European Research Council Starting Grant, title: Hybrid Electrochemically mediated Light Irradiated Organic Synthesis (HELIOS)

Pre-requisites for the position are: i) a PhD in synthetic chemistry (organic), ii) experience in electro-organic synthesis, and iii) expertise in setting up a laboratory and a track record in training and mentoring Ph. D and Master students. Furthermore, desired expertise includes synthetic photochemistry and organic synthesis methodology in post-modification, including skeletal editing and/or late-stage functionalization.

The Institution: The Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry hosts ca. 40 academic staff and has research strengths in Catalysis and Synthesis, Chemical Biology and Medicinal Chemistry, Materials and Computational Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Bionanotechnology, and Forensic Science. Research facilities include a well-equipped NMR suite with four spectrometers (400 – 600 MHz), and an open-access analytical suite with equipment including GC-FID, GC-MS, and LC-MS.

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to John Murphy, Research Professor, Pure and Applied Chemistry (john.murphy@strath.ac.uk).

Formal interviews for this post will be held in August.
