The Faculty of Science seeks to appoint a Research Software Engineer in order to support staff and students in raising skills in scientific programming and software project management, curate and maintain large data assets, and support online teaching and class testing applications.

Based within the Faculty of Science, the postholder will work closely with researchers in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, an internationally recognised research department specialising in the use of modelling and analysis to solve many problems relevant to industry, business and wider society.  The Department is home to over 700 undergraduates, taught postgraduate and PhD students with an increasing emphasis on online delivery of high-quality educational programmes.  

The Research Software Engineer will, in the first instance, form part of the team of mathematicians and statisticians working within the Health and Ecology Modelling Research Group which covers mathematical ecology and health statistics themes.  The Department has world-leading expertise in population modelling and epidemiology and, in particular, the use of modelling techniques to extract information from complex data sets with an emphasis on practical problems.  The Department also has active research groups in analysis, and continuum mechanics and industrial mathematics.  The successful applicant will thus join a vibrant and enthusiastic environment that promotes excellence in teaching, research and knowledge exchange activities. 

Under the general guidance of a research leader, you will develop new research software and contribute to the development and maintenance of the existing code base.  You will provide advice to students and contribute to teaching as required by, for example, running tutorials and supervising practical work.  You will contribute in a developing capacity to Department, Faculty and/or University administrative and management functions and committees and engage in continuous professional development.

To be considered for the role, you will have a degree in an appropriate discipline (e.g. computer science), and/or have suitable relevant experience.  You will have sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in scientific computing as well as the ability to plan and organise your workload and work effectively within a team environment.
