Salary Range: £30,738
FTE: 1
Term: Fixed (12 months)
Closing Date: 12/06/2016

Applications are invited for two one-year Research Associate posts within the Centre for the Social History of Health and Healthcare (CSHHH) Glasgow at the University of Strathclyde (www.strath.ac.uk/cshhh.)The CSHHH Glasgow was established in 2005 as a research collaboration in the Medical Humanities.  It is now an internationally-recognised research environment and postgraduate community founded on funding from the Wellcome Trust and from the UK’s research councils. The successful applicants will be embedded in this community and will also be able to draw upon the wider collaborative environment in the School of Humanities and the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

The Centre seeks to attract two outstanding early career scholars to work on a project entitled ‘The Asian Cocaine Crisis: Pharmaceuticals, consumers and control in South and East Asia, c. 1900-1945’ led by Professor James Mills.  The project tackles the questions of why Asians took to cocaine in the first half of the twentieth century and what drove governments there to respond so rapidly to the demand for this medicine and intoxicant.  Funded by the Wellcome Trust, partners include the UK Home Office, India's National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences, and the universities of Shanghai and Leiden.

One post holder will report to Professor Mills and work in British and German archives, with the relevant language skills. In Germany the Research Associate will examine archives of Merk and Boehringer and will also work in British archives on official sources.

The other post holder will report to Professor Mills and work in British and Indian archives, with the relevant language skills, exploring psychiatric case notes at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences Bangalore, literary sources and Indian language newspapers, and official sources in the national archives of India in Delhi and the West Bengal States Archives in Kolkata.

Applicants will have a good honours degree in a relevant subject, as well as a PhD in the History of Health and Medicine or a related Humanities field, or be near completion of their PhD.  It is essential applicants have excellent verbal and written language skills to work in either Germany or India.

The posts will include allowances for travel to archives and conferences.  While these are one-year appointments in the first instance the Centre has a good track-record in securing external funding to develop post-doctoral careers and successful candidates will be supported in developing plans in this direction.

Applicant should indicate on their covering letter whether they wish to apply for the Research Associate based in Britain and Germany or the Research Associate based in Britain and India.

Formal interviews for this post will be held on Friday, 24 June 2016.
