The Law School seeks a Research Associate to work with Professor Simon Halliday on an externally funded research project. The project, Administrative Fairness and Social Security for Adults with Disabilities, is examining the procedural fairness perceptions of people claiming disability-related social security benefits. The project combines qualitative and quantitative methods. As a Research Associate, you will focus on the quantitative elements of the research, under the supervision of Professor Halliday of the Law School at Strathclyde University and Dr Ben Seyd of the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Kent.

You will be responsible for distributing a paper-based survey within Scotland, using the networks of our research partner, the Scottish Commission for People with Learning Disabilities. Also, with Dr Seyd, you will liaise with an online panel provider to distribute an online survey at UK-level. You will prepare survey datasets for analysis and will conduct quantitative analyses of the data under the guidance of Ben Seyd and Simon Halliday. Such analyses will include providing and presenting descriptive data along with analysis up to multivariate regression modelling. You will also play a significant role in writing reports on the data analysis. You will also write up research work for publication, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, and disseminate the results via peer reviewed journal publications and presentation at conferences. You will collaborate with colleagues on the development of knowledge exchange activities by, for example, participating in initiatives which influence public policy and the professions. You will contribute in a developing capacity to Department/School, Faculty and/or University administrative and management functions and committees and engage in continuous professional development.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of PhD level in an appropriate discipline, or have significant relevant experience in addition to a relevant degree. You will have statistical ability up to and including multivariate regression modelling, and good practical skills in a data analysis package such as R, SPSS or Stata. You will also have an ability to conduct individual research work, to disseminate results and to prepare research proposals. You will have an ability to plan and organise your own workload effectively and an ability to work within a team environment. You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an accessible way to a range of audiences.

Whilst not essential for the role, applications are welcomed from candidates with: relevant work experience, membership of relevant Chartered/professional bodies (including the Higher Education Academy), experience of relevant student supervision, and/or experience of knowledge exchange related activities.

It is anticipated that formal interviews for this post will be held on 01 August 2024

Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Professor Simon Halliday, simon.halliday@strath.ac.uk
