Research Associate in Industrial Biotechnology (137069)

Salary Range: £31,604 - £38,833
FTE: 1.0
Term: Fixed (18 months)
Closing Date: 25 July 2018

The University of Strathclyde hosts the Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Centre (IBioIC). The Centre launched in January 2014 and is set to receive its phase II funding from the Scottish Funding Council, Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise through to mid-2023 with considerable additional funding from the industrial membership of the Centre and other collaborative grants. The Centre has a growing group of paying industrial members (currently 114) and 18 Higher Education Institute partners. The key aim of the Centre is to facilitate the delivery of the National Plan for Industrial Biotechnology (IB) to create a £900 million IB sector in Scotland by 2025. The Centre leads the development of the necessary projects, technologies, skills and fosters the industrial relationships and new value chains to ensure this goal is met.

The Rapid Bioprocess Prototyping Centre (RapidBio) located at the University of Strathclyde is focused around bioprocess stages up to an industrially compatible scale (15 litre reactors) and houses advanced technology to assess the potential of new cell lines, bio-products and novel approaches to bioprocessing.
The current role provides an excellent opportunity to work as part of a small, dynamic team, delivering industry-led research projects which exploit the scale-up facilities within the Equipment Centres. Based primarily at RapidBio, the post holder will be responsible for the practical delivery of IBioIC Equipment Centre projects, working closely with clients from industry and academia. Due to the start-up nature of the facilities, the successful candidate will demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to undertake a broad range of duties and responsibilities, including executing practical work on defined client projects, general lab upkeep, equipment maintenance, preparing and developing standard operating procedures (SOPs), planning collecting data and preparing client reports.

Applications are invited from candidates seeking a challenging role, with an honours degree in a relevant science or engineering subject (such as microbiology, chemistry biochemistry or process engineering) and a PhD in a topic which aligns with the activities within the IBioIC Equipment Centres (microbiology, fermentation, biocatalysis, bioprocessing, molecular biology).

The role is offered on a full-time, fixed-term basis (18 months in the first instance) and the post holder will report to Head of Institute.

For informal enquiries, please contact Dr Paul Herron, Senior Lecturer, at paul.herron@strath.ac.uk or on 0141 548 2531.

Interviews have been scheduled to take place on 15 August 2018.
