The School of Psychological Sciences and Health is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant (grade 6) to a fixed-term contract in Psychology to support a new exciting project aimed at delivering new peripheral biomarkers for the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.
This project combines academic research and industry to investigate the utility of in-lab and in-home use of EEG ("brainwave") recording and mobile cognitive games, for healthy adults and adults with mild cognitive impairment (aged 55+). If successful, this technology could be used to allow people to monitor and track their own brain health, linking it with lifestyle factors and allowing for recognition of cognitive decline at the very earliest stage.
The role is research focused and involves the integration of technology into a health care setting.
This post is funded full-time for six months as part of a multi-site project led by Belfast-based start-up company BrainWaveBank Ltd.
The successful candidate will assist in the day-to-day running of the research project ‘Evaluation of in-home monitoring using the BrainWaveBank platform for people with Mild Cognitive Impairment’ under the supervision of Dr Mario Parra-Rodriguez, School of Psychological Sciences and Health, University of Strathclyde, Glasgow.
This will involve conducting surveys and assessments, collecting and collating data, together with undertaking and recording the outcomes of experiments. Data collection may involve various NHS organizations in Scotland which the Research Assistant will have to visit for such a purpose.
The Research Assistant will need to manage and prioritise their workload and ensure that all activities are completed to deadlines. They will also contribute towards the write up of the results and the production of research reports and publications.
To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of Degree level in Psychology and you will have sufficient breadth or depth of knowledge in cognitive and neuropsychological assessment, and ideally experience working or doing research with older adults. You will have knowledge of appropriate research methods, have an ability to plan and prioritise your own workload, with general supervision.
Formal interviews for this post are likely to be held on 30 September 2019.
Informal enquiries about the post can be directed to Dr Mario Parra, Lecturer (Mario.parra-rodriguez@strath.ac.uk).
